Processing Considerations
Due to the 30 days before and after convention, to have truly comprehensive and complete reporting, the month subsequent to the reporting date should be Refreshed prior to executing the wash sales process; however, this is not required. To the extent that future data exists, it is evaluated. Once the wash sales process has been run, if a future month is Refreshed, and buys that had not been included in the wash sales evaluation are added, wash sales processing must be rerun to include these buys. If the wash sales process is not rerun, the buys are eligible to be used in the following period's wash sales evaluation.
For example, if running wash sales for the first quarter of 2009, and the Insurance Refresh has been completed through March, buys in the 30 days after cannot be evaluated. If the warehouse has been Refreshed through April, all buys in April are included for wash sales matching. If, after running the first quarter wash sales process, April is Refreshed and a buy that would have caused a wash sale of a March sale is newly added, the first quarter wash sales are not adjusted. This buy may then be matched against a sale that occurred in the second quarter that it would not have otherwise been matched against had the first quarter wash sales process been rerun.
While sells represent a discreet time period, traded in a quarter or annual period, buys may fall into multiple evaluation periods. If a buy is linked to a sell in one period, to the extent that it was matched based on quantity, it is not available to be matched in a subsequent period. If only a portion of the buy was matched to a sell in one period, the remaining quantity may be matched to a sell in a subsequent period assuming the trade date of the buy was in the final 30 days of the period.
You can use the Freeze panel to freeze Quarterly and Annual Wash Sales periods. When frozen, the wash sales process cannot be executed for that period. You must Re-open the wash sales period before performing the Wash Sales process.
