The first column in the sample report in the following figure shows a Performance Analysis field that reports the 1-day return. The particular day is determined at run-time using the effective date of the report profile.

Comparison Benchmark Fields

Next, add the return for the fund's comparison benchmark return to the report. The Performance Analysis field for a benchmark is the same as the fund's, except you set the entity to be used in the drop-down list list at the bottom of the form.
Diagram of Comparison Benchmark Fields
This example uses the fund's primary comparison benchmark. The report goes to the entity record for the fund and lookup the benchmark, and then retrieves the return for this column for the benchmark. You also can select a particular index to display against all funds. For example, you can create a column that always displays the S&P 500 return for the period.
The next column shows the difference between the two returns. This is a Rollup Calculation field, pointed at the two performance analysis fields.
Rollup Calculation Field
At the end of the report profile are two Contribution to Return fields, as shown in the following figure. These fields weight the returns for the securities or segments within the fund to determine how much each security or segment contributed to the fund's total return for the day.

Performance Analysis Field Options

This section describes the Performance Analysis field options.
Performance Analysis Field
The following table describes the options available in a Performance Analysis field.

Option

Description

Name

Controls the default column heading.

Comments

Not displayed on the report.

Precision

Decimal precision of the field. Can be overridden by each user of the report.

Effect

Action performed on the value retrieved from the database.

Smoothing

For Attribution effects, provides backwards compatibility to prior releases. Replaced by Performance Attribution fields.
For Contribution effects, you can set this option to a value of Carino-1992 to apply smoothing when you link this Performance Analysis field over multiple periods.

Frequency

Periodicity of the returns extracted.

Use Preliminary or Final

Set to Final to only display a multi-period return based on this field if all of the observations are in Final status.

Fields

PERFORM database field that is retrieved.

Use Entity

Select the entity to use for the field. You can select:

  • Profile Portfolio, the default value, which is the entity for which the report is running.

  • The primary comparison benchmark, or another option to make it a benchmark field.

  • Other Entities to select from a list of entities. If you select one, the entity is always used for this column, instead of referring to the fund's benchmark from the report profile.
If you select a value other than Profile Portfolio, the remaining fields in this section become available.

Use Fund Fiscal Year

If you are defining a benchmark field, you can select this check box to link from the fund's fiscal year end date.

Use Fund Inception Date

If you are defining a benchmark field, you can select this check box to link from the fund's inception date.

Use Fund Termination Date

If you are defining a benchmark field, you can select this check box to use the related fund's termination date as a stop date for a linking period when that termination date occurs after the start date but occurs prior to the end date of the link period.
If you select this option for inception-to-date fields or fields greater than one year, the annualization day count also uses the termination date rather than the period end date for the field.

If you are defining a Performance Analysis field for use in a Performance Calculation report, be aware that the Performance Calculation report supports source specific Performance Analysis fields. By specifying a Performance Source on the underlying Performance field, only data from that source is returned under that field in the report. For more information, see Performance Calculation.

Performance Analysis Effects

The effects are the operations that are performed on the field, as described in the following table. The inputs are the database values that are extracted to create the effect. Several of these effects have been replaced by newer field types, but remain on the window for backwards compatibility to prior releases. These are noted in the column, Replaced By. Documentation for these effects can be found in previous versions of the Performance manuals.

Statistic

Return

Return

Extracts the return, market value or other value stored in the PERFORM database.

Begin Value

Return

Extracts the return, market value or other value stored in the PERFORM database for the begin date of the Performance Link Analysis field pointed to this field. Returns the value as of the Prior Month if Monthly frequency or as of Prior Day if Daily frequency. When used in a Performance Link Analysis field, returns the stored value as of the Beginning of the Link Period.

Contribution

Return
Weighting

First calculates a weight for the security or segment within the portfolio using the weighting field. Then multiplies this weight by the return.

End Value

Return

Extracts the return, market value, or other value stored in the PERFORM database for the effective date of the report. When used in a Performance Link Analysis field, this returns the value as of the End of the Link Period, which may be different from the Report Effective Date only if using the Custom Date Rule linking option.

Index ID

ENTITY table field

Extracts the entity ID for the comparison benchmark selected (for example, primary comparison benchmark).

Index Name

Entity table or Entity Extension table field

Extracts the entity name for the comparison benchmark selected, for example, primary comparison benchmark.

Weight

Weighting

Calculates a weight for the security or segment within the portfolio using the weighting field.

Performance Attribution Fields

  • The correct configuration is to specify Unit Value as the return type in the PERFORM database field and the Return effect in the corresponding Performance Analysis field. Therefore, the Unit Value field was removed from the Performance Analysis field.

  • A check was added to the upgrade scripts that lists the fields using the Unit Value effect and warns that they should be reconfigured. Knowledge Base article #5029 details the steps required when reconfiguring a field.

Field Attributes

  • A check was added to the upgrade scripts that lists the fields using the Unit Value effect and warns that they should be reconfigured. Knowledge Base article #5029 details the steps required when reconfiguring a field.

The Performance Analysis fields also read data from the Entity Extension table for the Index Name effect.

Perform Rollup Relation Load at Security Level

Eagle Performance provides an optimization to bypass the analysis of how securities change sectors over multiple periods when the Performance Analysis report profile is set to calculate attribution statistics at a level above security level. The attribution group analysis goes down to the selected level, and the security sector change analysis is performed for the report only when the analysis is down to the detailed security level.

Performance Held Period Dates

The Performance Held Period dates indicate the period each security/sector held during the analysis period like the Begin date, End date and the number of held days.

The Performance Held Period Dates field uses the underlying return field as the input and can display the Held Period Start Date(A), End Date(B), Number of days Held (B-A), and all three options combined.

Note: The Held Period is calculated based on First in and Last out/Last held. It does not account for assets sold off and re-acquired during the analysis period.
