About Metadata Types

In the Metadata Manager, metadata types refer to specific types of the available metadata, for example, database columns, field attributes, or Message Center streams. You can manage the available metadata types in the Types window.

The Metadata Manager supports two classes of types:

  • Elements. Types that have items and item details. These are all types, including database columns, reports, tags, panels, etc., with the exception of datamaps.
  • Maps. Type that has items and map details, currently contains datamaps only. 

About the Types Window

The Types window displays all the available metadata types by categories. You can scroll down to select a particular type or use the left navigation to narrow down types by categories, for example, Data Management, Eagle Dictionaries, or Enterprise.
You can also change the way information is displayed in the Types window by setting the Grid Mode (default), or the Carousel Mode.

To change how information is displayed in the Types window:

  1. From any Metadata Manager window, click Types in the navigation path, or click the Types bottom tab to display types in the workspace.
  2. To change the current view, click the  in the workspace and select the appropriate view.
  3. To change the view for the next time you log in, from any Metadata Manager window, click Settings.

Supported Metadata Types

The Metadata Manager is installed with all the supported metadata types and type categories. The metadata type categories are displayed in the left navigation and are used to narrow down type selection.

To view the supported metadata types:

  1. From any Metadata Manager window, click Types in the navigation path, or click the Types bottom tab to display types in the workspace.
    In the left navigation, you see the supported type categories. In the workspace, you see the supported metadata types.
  2. To run a report on the supported metadata types, click Analysis, select Metadata, and click Type and Attribute List - All.
  3. To reconcile the metadata types in your system, compare the resulting report to the Eagle Gold snapshot. 
  4. To return to the Types window, click the Types bottom tab.

About Items

In the Metadata Manager, items contain the actual metadata. Each type has a list of items, for example, the Database type has a list of items that include HOLDINGDBO, SECURITYDBO, etc. The item is HOLDINGDBO. You can manage the available list of items in the Items window and actual item details in the Item Detail window.

About the Items and Item Details Windows

The Items window displays all the available items for a specific type. You can scroll down to select a particular item and drill down to view the item details. The Item Details window contains all the item details, including attributes, parents and children, and mapping for the selected item.

To access the Items and Item Detail windows:

  1. From any Metadata Manager window, click Types in the navigation path, or click the Types bottom tab to display types in the workspace.
  2. Double click a row to select a specific type for which you wish to display item details.
    You see the Items window with the item list for the type you selected.
  3. Double click to select a specific item.
    You see the Item Detail window for the item you selected with the Attributes view as the default.
  4. To return to the Types window, click the Types bottom tab.

About Attributes

In the Metadata Manager, attributes provide descriptive information about a type, item, or datamap. Item details include attributes and show the immediate relationships of an item, including parent, children, and mapping. Type attributes are also used as categories in the left navigation to narrow down the search for types and items. The Metadata Manager is installed with a default set of attributes and you can add, change, or delete attributes. You can manage the available type attributes in the Type Attributes window.

To view all available type attributes:

  1. From any Metadata Manager window, click Types in the navigation path, or click the Types bottom tab to display types in the workspace.
  2. Click Metadata and double click Type Attributes.
    You see the attributes for all the supported types.
  3. To return to the Types window, click the Types bottom tab.
