In the Long Term Debt (Govt/Corp/Muni) panel, you can manually add and change a long term debt instrument.

This article assumes you are familiar with the entity elections that have been made for processing long term debt instruments.

About Long Term Debt Instruments

A long term debt instrument is a loan or an obligation with a maturity of longer than one year. It is usually accompanied by an interest payment. The basic difference between equity and debt accounting is that debt accounting has two components. That is, principal cost and interest. You can add the following long term debt instruments using the Long Term Debt panel:

  • Treasury inflation protected securities (TIPs)

  • Inflation linked bonds (ILBs)

  • Municipal bonds

  • Convertible bonds

  • Discount bonds

  • Payment in kind bonds (PIKs)

  • Default bonds

About TIP/ILB Securities

In the Long Term Debt (Govt/Corp/Muni) panel, you can manually add a treasury inflation protected security (TIP) and an inflation linked bond (ILB). A TIP/ILB security is a special type of treasury note or bond that offers protection from inflation. Like other treasuries, an inflation indexed security pays interest and pays the principal when the security matures. The difference is that the coupon payments and underlying principal are automatically increased to compensate for inflation, as measured by the consumer price index (CPI). Before you can add a TIP/ILB security, you need to add the index that will be used to measure the inflation component of the TIP/ILB security. See the Manage ILBs in Issue Viewer page and Understand Inflation Linked Bonds for more information on ILBs.

The system uses the value in the Processing Security Type field on the Long Term Debt panel to identify the type of long term debt instrument you are adding. To add a TIP/ILB security, select DBFLTP (Inflation Linked Debt Security) from the Processing Security Type drop down list. Additionally, select Fixed from the Coupon Type Code drop down list. The coupon rate does not change through the life of a TIP/ILB security. When you select DBFLTP, the system displays additional fields that allow you to enter underlying security information. Add the underlying security information in the Underlying Security ID, Underlying Issue Name, Underlying Type, Dated Date CPI, ILB Index Precision, ILB Deflation Protected Maturity, and ILB Calculation Type fields. Eagle supports different inflationary income calculation methods for ILBs. The dynamic lookup for this field returns all values in the ILB CALC TYPE code category.

About PIK Bonds

In the Long Term Debt (Govt/Corp/Muni) panel, you can manually add a PIK (payment in kind) bond. A PIK bond is a financial instrument that pays all or part of the periodic interest or dividends in cash or securities.

The system uses the value in the Processing Security Type field on the Long Term Debt panel to identify the type of long term debt instrument you are adding. To add a PIK bond, select DBIBPK (Interest Bearing Debt PIK) from the Processing Security Type drop down list, and select Yes from the PIK Flag drop down list to indicate the long term debt instrument is a PIK bond. For more information, see About Security Reference Data for PIK Bonds.

About Convertible Bonds

In the Long Term Debt panel, you can set up a convertible bond. A convertible bond is an issue giving the bondholder the right to exchange the bond for a specified number of shares of common stock. This feature allows the bondholder to take advantage of favorable movements in the price of the issuer's common stock.

The system uses the value in the Processing Security Type field on the Long Term Debt panel to identify the type of long term debt instrument you are adding. To add a convertible bond, select DBIBFD (Interest Bearing Debt Instrument) from the Processing Security Type drop down list. Select Variable Rate from the Coupon Type Code drop down list if the convertible bond has a floating rate or inverse floating rate. Then, select Yes from the Convertible Indicator drop down list. When you select Yes, the system displays additional fields that allow you to enter underlying security information. Add the underlying security information in the Underlying Security ID, Underlying Issue Name, Underlying Type, and Index Offset fields. For more information, see Understand Convertible Bonds.

About Default Bonds

A default bond is a bond in which the issuer has defaulted on the debt obligations and has filed for protection under Chapter 11 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code. The system uses the value in the Default Indicator field to identify a default bond. To add a default bond, select Yes from the Default Indicator drop down list. The system does not process the maturity transaction of the bond at the time of maturity. Specify the date on which the bond went into default in the Default Date field. Add Long Term Debt Instruments

To manually add a long term debt instrument:

  1. In Accounting Center, in the left navigation pane, click Setup Securities > Manage Securities > Issue Viewer.
    You see the Issue Viewer tool.

  2. Click the Add arrow.

  3. Point to Fixed Income and click Long Term Debt.
    You see the Long Term Debt panel.

  4. Complete the options on the Long Term Debt panel.

  5. Click Submit.

Change Long Term Debt Instruments

Some fields are locked when there is an existing position on the security. This is because a change would impact the existing position. These fields include Asset Currency, Dual Currency Indicator, Investment Type, Processing Security Type, Quantity Type, Price Multiplier, and Quantity Scale. Other fields are locked so they cannot be changed. See the About Locked Security Master Record Fields in Issue Viewer page for more information.

If you need to change a security master record, Eagle recommends canceling the security, making changes to the security master record, and rebooking the security.

To manually change a long term debt instrument:

  1. In Accounting Center, in the left navigation pane, click Setup Securities > Manage Securities > Issue Viewer.
    You see the Issue Viewer tool.

  2. Enter the query parameters and click Search.
    You see a list of security records that meet your selection criteria in the Query Result window.

  3. Select the security record you want to update, click the Change arrow, and click Change Long Term Debt. Or double-click the security record.
    You see the Change Long Term Debt panel.

  4. Change the options on the Change Long Term Debt panel.

  5. Click Submit.

Investment Type

Processing Security Type

Specifies the code value that the system uses to identify the type of long term debt instrument you are adding. Options include:

  • DBFLTP. Inflation Linked Debt Instrument. The system requires that you populate the underlying index with the index that the security marks to market for inflation, and also requires a dated date CPI as part of the security master record setup. See the About ILBs section for more information.

  • DBIBFD. Interest Bearing Debt Instrument. The system calculates the security's amortization and trade yield based on a discount cash flow, adhering to values from the entity/accounting basis amortization rules. Accruals are calculated using the fixed income attributes from the security master each time earnings are run.

  • DBIBMU. Interest Bearing Municipal. The system calculates the security's amortization and trade yield based on a discount cash flow, adhering to values from the entity/accounting basis amortization rules. Accruals are calculated using the fixed income attributes from the security master, each time earnings are run.

  • DBIBPK. Interest Bearing Debt PIK. The system uses this code as a panel edit for processing payment in kind corporate actions and payment in kind processes. The system accrues and processes accretion and amortization in the normal manner, but the dropping of a coupon and or creation of baby bonds, occurs within corporate action processing. See Manage PIK Bonds Corporate Actions for more information. 

  • DBMFDD. Fund of Funds - Daily Distribution.

  • DBAMTL. Facility Term Loans. The system identifies the security as a Term Loan. See the Manage Term Loans in Issue Viewer page for more information.

  • DBIBTL. Contract Term Loans. The system identifies the security as a Term Loan. See the Manage Term Loans page for more information.

  • DBIVIV. Inverse Floating Debt Instruments. The system identifies the security as an inverse floating debt bond. Based on this code, the system accrues inversely to an index. The Coupon Type field must be set to Inverse Floating Rate and you must add the underlying information, such as Inverse Floater Rate and Inverse Floater Multiple fields when you create the security.

  • No. Default. Indicates that the security is not a dual currency instrument.

Asset Currency

Specifies the currency in which the security is priced. You should not change this value once a position exists. For a dual currency instrument, the asset currency identified in this field is the base currency.

Income Currency

Specifies the currency in which the security pays income. This field displays the asset currency by default, but you can change it if you identify the security as a dual currency instrument. For a dual currency instrument, this value may be called the settlement currency. When the income currency differs from the asset currency for a dual currency instrument, the security accrues income in the asset currency but converts the local currency amounts to the income currency at the time the coupon is dropped based on the fixing parameters specified for the dual currency instrument.

  • Floating Rate. The security has fixed coupon dates and uses a variable rate that is based on an underlying index and index offset to calculate the coupon to use for earnings. You must enter the rate in the Variable Rate table.

  • Variable Rate. The security has fixed coupon dates and uses a variable rate based on the security identifier to calculate the coupon for use in earnings. You must enter the rate in the Variable Rate table.

  • Inverse Floater. The security has fixed coupon dates and uses a variable rate whose coupon rate is calculated inversely to the underlying index to which it is attached. When you select this value, the system displays the following fields: Inverse Floater Rate, Inverse Floater Multiple, Underlying Issue Name, Underlying Asset ID, and Index Offset. You must enter the rate in the Variable Rate table.

  • Step Rate. The security has fixed coupon dates and uses a variable rate based on the security identifier to calculate the coupon for use in earnings. You must enter the rate in the Variable Rate table. The system recognizes this option as a step bond (also called a step coupon bond, step up bond, or step down bond).

  • Fixed Rate. The security has fixed coupon dates and has a fixed coupon rate to calculate the coupon for use in earnings.

  • Unscheduled Variable Rate. The security has unscheduled payments and accrues interest based on a rate you enter in the Variable Rate table.

Day Count Basis

First Coupon Date

Specifies the date of the first coupon payment.

The First Coupon Date, Last Coupon Date, and Payment Frequency fields are used to create a coupon schedule for the security, from issuance to maturity date. The coupon schedule consists of three coupon periods.
The system uses the Dated Date and the First Coupon Date fields in the earnings process to calculate the first coupon period. The first coupon period can be a long length coupon period, a short coupon period, or a normal length coupon period.

The system uses the First Coupon Date, Payment Frequency, Timing of Payment, Day of Month Override, Business Day Convention, and Last Coupon Date fields in the earnings process to calculate the second coupon period (also referred to as the second to last period or penultimate).

The system uses the Last Coupon Date and the Maturity Date fields in the earnings process to calculate the last coupon period. The last coupon period can be a long length coupon period, a short length coupon period, or a normal length coupon period.

NOTE:  The first and last coupon date must be in sync with the payment frequency of the bond.

Last Coupon Date

Trading Flat

  • Yes. The system does not calculate accrued interest purchased or sold at the time of the acquisition or disposition. In the event of a disposition mid-coupon, the system creates a coupon at the end of the coupon period based on the interest earned during the period.

  • No. The system calculates accrued interest purchased or sold at the time of the acquisition or disposition.

OID Indicator

Indicates whether the security is OID (original issue discount) eligible. Options include:

  • Yes. The security is OID eligible. For this flag to be set to Yes, the value in the Issue Price field must be less than the value in the Maturity Price field. The value in the Maturity Price field cannot be 0.

  • No. The security is not OID eligible.

Zero Coupon Indicator

Indicates if a zero in the Coupon field represents a zero coupon bond. Options include:

  • Yes. The zero represents a zero coupon bond.

  • No. The zero does not represent a zero coupon bond.

Convertible Indicator

  • Yes. The security is a convertible bond. You must set up underlying security information by specifying a value in the Underlying Issue Name and Underlying Asset ID fields.

  • No. The security is not a convertible bond. The system does not allow you to set up the underlying security information.

Call Flag

Indicates whether the security has a call option. Options include:

  • Yes. The security has a call option. You need to add call information for the security so that the system can calculate the yield for the security during the earnings process.

  • No. The security does not have a call option.

NOTE: This field must be set to Yes to add a call corporate action.

  • Yes. The security has a put option. You need to add put information for the security so that the system can calculate the yield for the security during the earnings process.

  • No. The security does not have a put option.

  • Yes. The security is eligible for sinking fund payments. You need to add sink information for the security so that the system can calculate the yield for the security during the earnings process.

  • Reg D. An SEC regulation governing private placement exemptions. This rule allows some companies to raise capital through the sale of equity or debt securities without having to register the securities with the SEC.

  • Private Placement. The raising of capital using private rather than public placement. The result is the sale of securities to a relatively small number of investors.

  • 4(2) Paper

  • Other

  • None

Inactive Flag
