Manage Long Term Debt Instruments in Issue Viewer
In the Long Term Debt (Govt/Corp/Muni) panel, you can manually add and change a long term debt instrument.
This article assumes you are familiar with the entity elections that have been made for processing long term debt instruments.
About Long Term Debt Instruments
A long term debt instrument is a loan or an obligation with a maturity of longer than one year. It is usually accompanied by an interest payment. The basic difference between equity and debt accounting is that debt accounting has two components. That is, principal cost and interest. You can add the following long term debt instruments using the Long Term Debt panel:
Treasury inflation protected securities (TIPs)
Inflation linked bonds (ILBs)
Municipal bonds
Convertible bonds
Discount bonds
Payment in kind bonds (PIKs)
Default bonds
About TIP/ILB Securities
In the Long Term Debt (Govt/Corp/Muni) panel, you can manually add a treasury inflation protected security (TIP) and an inflation linked bond (ILB). A TIP/ILB security is a special type of treasury note or bond that offers protection from inflation. Like other treasuries, an inflation indexed security pays interest and pays the principal when the security matures. The difference is that the coupon payments and underlying principal are automatically increased to compensate for inflation, as measured by the consumer price index (CPI). Before you can add a TIP/ILB security, you need to add the index that will be used to measure the inflation component of the TIP/ILB security. The system uses the value in the Processing Security Type field on the Long Term Debt panel to identify the type of long term debt instrument you are adding. To add a TIP/ILB security, select DBFLTP (Inflation Linked Debt Security) from the Processing Security Type drop down list. Additionally, select Fixed from the Coupon Type Code drop down list. The coupon rate does not change through the life of a TIP/ILB security. When you select DBFLTP, the system displays additional fields that allow you to enter underlying security information. Add the underlying security information in the Underlying Security ID, Underlying Issue Name, Underlying Type, Dated Date CPI, ILB Index Precision, ILB Deflation Protected Maturity, and ILB Calculation Type fields. Eagle supports different inflationary income calculation methods for ILBs. The dynamic lookup for this field returns all values in the ILB CALC TYPE code category.
About PIK Bonds
In the Long Term Debt (Govt/Corp/Muni) panel, you can manually add a PIK (payment in kind) bond. A PIK bond is a financial instrument that pays all or part of the periodic interest or dividends in cash or securities.
The system uses the value in the Processing Security Type field on the Long Term Debt panel to identify the type of long term debt instrument you are adding. To add a PIK bond, select DBIBPK (Interest Bearing Debt PIK) from the Processing Security Type drop down list, and select Yes from the PIK Flag drop down list to indicate the long term debt instrument is a PIK bond. For more information, see About Security Reference Data for PIK Bonds.
About Convertible Bonds
In the Long Term Debt panel, you can set up a convertible bond. A convertible bond is an issue giving the bondholder the right to exchange the bond for a specified number of shares of common stock. This feature allows the bondholder to take advantage of favorable movements in the price of the issuer's common stock.
The system uses the value in the Processing Security Type field on the Long Term Debt panel to identify the type of long term debt instrument you are adding. To add a convertible bond, select DBIBFD (Interest Bearing Debt Instrument) from the Processing Security Type drop down list. Select Variable Rate from the Coupon Type Code drop down list if the convertible bond has a floating rate or inverse floating rate. Then, select Yes from the Convertible Indicator drop down list. When you select Yes, the system displays additional fields that allow you to enter underlying security information. Add the underlying security information in the Underlying Security ID, Underlying Issue Name, Underlying Type, and Index Offset fields. For more information, see Understand Convertible Bonds.
About Default Bonds
A default bond is a bond in which the issuer has defaulted on the debt obligations and has filed for protection under Chapter 11 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code. The system uses the value in the Default Indicator field to identify a default bond. To add a default bond, select Yes from the Default Indicator drop down list. The system does not process the maturity transaction of the bond at the time of maturity. Specify the date on which the bond went into default in the Default Date field. Add Long Term Debt Instruments
To manually add a long term debt instrument:
In Accounting Center, in the left navigation pane, click Setup > Securities > Manage Securities > Issue Viewer.
You see the Issue Viewer tool.Click the Add arrow.
Point to Fixed Income and click Long Term Debt.
You see the Long Term Debt panel.Complete the options on the Long Term Debt panel.
Click Submit.
Change Long Term Debt Instruments
Some fields are locked when there is an existing position on the security. This is because a change would impact the existing position. These fields include Asset Currency, Dual Currency Indicator, Investment Type, Processing Security Type, Quantity Type, Price Multiplier, and Quantity Scale. Other fields are locked so they cannot be changed. See the About Locked Security Master Record Fields in Issue Viewer page for more information.
If you need to change a security master record, Eagle recommends canceling the security, making changes to the security master record, and rebooking the security.
To manually change a long term debt instrument:
In Accounting Center, in the left navigation pane, click Setup > Securities > Manage Securities > Issue Viewer.
You see the Issue Viewer tool.Enter the query parameters and click Search.
You see a list of security records that meet your selection criteria in the Query Result window.Select the security record you want to update, click the Change arrow, and click Change Long Term Debt. Or double-click the security record.
You see the Change Long Term Debt panel.Change the options on the Change Long Term Debt panel.
Click Submit.
