PDC encompasses an exception-based workflow to provide data governance on portfolio reference data. The workflow is based on business rules applied as Validations to entity reference fields that define the integrity of a field’s value and its release status for downstream processing. Field values that do not meet the Validation criteria defined for a particular field are displayed as Exceptions in the PDC workflow. You can view the existing exceptions in Entity Summary window as well as within the Edit Entity Details window. In Portfolio Data Center, you can resolve the exceptions in two ways:

In the case of performing an override to resolve an exception of a failed field validation, whether it is an error or warning, you can override the errant data in such a way it resolves the exception for the field according to the validation criteria defined in the Portfolio Data Field Settings or the entity's Policy configuration. The PDC engine validates the change before it updates the current definition and assigns appropriate defined release level.

In the case of Release Exception, the system allows an entity which has failed the validation criteria to be released without making any changes to it. This feature allows the user to remove the exception without actually changing the data value to meet the validation criteria, though the validation failure is caused because of missing or incorrect data. However, the release status of the entity is updated as if the field was overridden to meet the field’s validation criteria. Typically this feature is used on very limited occasions, when you do not believe the situation warrants creating or altering a validation rule for a specific entity or limited set of entities.
